MIT research reveals: excessive reliance on AI writing may harm cognitive abilities

The Potential Impact of AI-Assisted Writing on Cognitive Abilities: Latest MIT Research Revealed

Recently, a large-scale study conducted by MIT delved into the application of large language models (LLMs) in educational writing scenarios and their impact on cognitive abilities. The study lasted for 4 months and involved 54 participants, aiming to assess the effects of using AI tools like ChatGPT on human brain activity and writing skills.

The research team divided participants into three groups: those using LLMs, those using search engines, and those relying solely on their brains. Through various methods such as electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, natural language processing analysis, and in-depth interviews, the researchers comprehensively assessed the impact of different tools on the writing process and cognitive load.

The results show that excessive reliance on AI-assisted tools may have a negative impact on cognitive abilities. This is specifically reflected in the following aspects:

  1. Homogenization of articles: The articles from the LLM group show significant statistical homogeneity across various topics, while the group relying solely on the brain exhibits greater diversity.

  2. Information density difference: The LLM group used the most specific named entities, which is 2.5 times that of the brain-only group.

  3. Reduced originality: Participants using LLMs and search engines tend to reuse the output of the tools rather than incorporating personal viewpoints.

  4. Reduced neural activity: EEG analysis shows that as external tool support increases, the degree of brain connectivity systematically decreases. The LLM-assisted group exhibits the weakest overall neural coupling.

  5. Memory decline: Over 83% of ChatGPT users are unable to accurately recall content they wrote just a few minutes ago.

  6. Reduced sense of belonging: The LLM group shows the lowest sense of belonging to the articles they wrote.

Researchers emphasize that although this study has not yet been peer-reviewed, its results are worth noting. In particular, for young users, over-reliance on AI tools may hinder the enhancement of learning skills.

MIT Report: Over-reliance on AI chatbots can reduce thinking ability

However, this does not mean that AI tools are inherently harmful. The key lies in how these tools are used wisely, rather than relying on them blindly. The research team suggests conducting long-term longitudinal studies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the long-term effects of AI chatbots on human cognitive abilities.

This research provides important references for educators, policymakers, and technology developers, helping to formulate more effective educational strategies and technology application guidelines in the AI era. At the same time, it also reminds us that while embracing new technologies, we should not overlook the importance of cultivating independent thinking and creativity.
